Hat furring channels—also known as furring channels or drywall furring channels—are essential framing components used to “fur out” walls and ceilings. By creating a space between the existing surface and the finished layer, they provide an ideal solution for installing insulation, running electrical wiring, or leveling uneven surfaces before applying drywall, siding, or other finishes.
Features and Applications
Versatile Framing Solution:
Hat furring channels are hat-shaped, corrosion-resistant steel components commonly used to fur out masonry walls and ceiling assemblies. In concrete wall applications, they are installed vertically using concrete nails or power-driven fasteners, providing a secure base for attaching gypsum panels or other wall finishes.
Flexible Installation:
Furring channels can be attached directly to the building structure with screws or power-driven fasteners. Heavier gauge options, such as 18 or 16 gauge, are ideal for exterior applications and can serve as purlins, offering greater span and load capacity.
Improved Surface Leveling:
These channels are perfect for evening out irregular or uneven walls, creating a flat, consistent surface for finishing materials like wallboard or plasterboard.
Space for Utilities:
The cavity created by furring channels accommodates insulation, electrical wiring, pipes, and other utilities, enhancing both thermal performance and soundproofing.
Durable and Secure:
Manufactured from light-gauge steel, hat furring channels provide a strong, reliable framework for attaching finish materials away from the structural wall or ceiling.
